Therapies I offer
I have trained in a range of different therapeutic models that can be tailored to meet your individual needs. See below for a summary of specific therapies that I am trained in. Once I have completed an assessment of your needs, I will develop a treatment plan that is bespoke to your difficulties and may involve drawing on more than one therapeutic model.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
is an evidence-based treatment that helps you notice and challenge negative thinking patterns and behavioural responses that maintain your low mood/ anxious feelings. It is an effective treatment for a wide range of different conditions such as anxiety disorders, OCD, depression and chronic fatigue. In the CBT model, our thoughts, feelings, physiological responses and behaviours are viewed as all being interconnected.
Targeting one of these areas will lead to change in the other areas. In CBT you may be asked to keep diaries or thought records to monitor your negative automatic thoughts and feelings in between our sessions. We will then examine these in our sessions and you will learn strategies to challenge your negative thinking and responses. You may be asked to try out new behaviours as part of an approach to challenging your fixed thoughts on a situation.
Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT)
is an effective treatment for clients who struggle with managing emotions, impulsivity and who have difficulties in relationships with others. The aim of MBT is to help you pause and reflect on the thoughts, feelings, images and sensations that go through your mind. You will learn to become more aware of times you may be making assumptions about what other people think and feel about you. Clients who have undergone MBT therapy report feeling calmer and more in control of their emotions.
Trauma Therapy
is a specialist area of mine. I have worked with clients with complex trauma histories including domestic abuse, child abuse/neglect and intergenerational trauma. I am trained in Narrative Exposure Therapy and Trauma-Focused CBT.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT is a therapy that helps you accept what is out of your personal control and to commit to actions that can improve your life. The aim of ACT is to help you live an enriched and meaningful life.
In this therapy you learn to be present in the moment, and how to manage painful feelings and memories rather than trying to avoid these. This therapy can help you focus on where you want your life to be in line with your personal values.
Video Interaction Guidance (VIG)
is a brief therapy (typically 6-8 sessions) that can help parents/carers with difficulties in their relationship to their child or infant. The therapy focuses on a parent's strengths and helps parents develop their skills further through guided conversations around edited video clips of interaction between the parent and their child.
The clips help parents recognise moments of attunement and to develop this further. This therapy is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for children's attachment difficulties.
